THE Story

Silliman Group is the design and construction arm of a fast-growing real estate property management, development and investment company who specializes in the renovation of 1920s historic and mid-century modern apartment buildings. They approached Chicago Art Source to curate unique and diverse art programs for two luxury residential buildings in Hyde Park.

From an architectural standpoint, Solstice On The Park is shaped by the angles of the sun and one of the first Studio Gang projects to explore the idea of solar carving for environmental advantages. The goal of the art program was to subtly celebrate “solstice” and the angles of the sun through light, reflections and shadows.

To achieve this goal, Chicago Art Source focused on a variety of mediums including photography, sculpture, mixed media and paintings with a keen eye to celebrate local artists. We had the opportunity to work in collaboration with artists on bespoke commissions, as well as facilitate a meaningful studio visit to provide an immersive experience for the client to learn the artistic back stories.

From a lime green glowing shadow from a Jeroen Molenaar sculpture, to the reflections and light play seen in Cheryl Sorg’s Tree Rings mixed media piece, to the contrast of colors used in Amy Donaldson’s contemporary impressionist oil painting, each piece played with light, reflections and shadow in different ways.

At 5252 Apartments, Chicago Art Source was tasked to curate a group of focal art pieces that complement the aesthetic of the interior design and its distinctive finishes and sense of luxury.

With a focus on local artist commissions, Chicago Art Source collaborated with artist Ahavani Mullen on a unique mixed media painting for over the mantle as the feature piece on the amenity floor. We also had the opportunity to take the client on an artist visit to Pamela Staker’s studio where they ultimately discovered the anchor piece for the entire program - an 8’ x 4.5’ painting that captured the overall vibe and color palette of the building’s entrance.

Other pieces include original paintings by local Chicago artists, as well as a photographic image of a microscopic meteorite that pays homage to the building’s location near the Museum of Science & Industry. For both projects, Chicago Art Source also provided custom solutions relative to the finishing of the art pieces including both custom framing and installation.
