THE STORY
An outside-the-box project for us, GATX – the global leader in railcar leasing – came to Chicago Art Source to transform 120 years’ worth of company materials into an experiential branded environment that celebrates their rich history. Through this project, we would tell the story of how the business began, evolved and where it is today through striking visuals and a cohesive design.
We began by digging into GATX’s archived historical documents including advertisements, photographs, articles and more. Some pieces were digital files and others we worked with the original piece and converted them in order to create an engaging historical timeline. The piece now spans two long corridors within the company’s corporate office.
We also assessed their current company-owned art inventory and proposed repurposing and new layouts, including updated framing, to fit their new offices in a better manner. Throughout the design, we purposefully used a variety of materials from metals and vinyl graphics to dimensional lettering and acrylic displays for added interest to the overall aesthetic.
The end result transformed stacks of advertisements, photographs, documents and more into a modern display that visually illustrates over a century’s worth of GATX history.
